In 1989 Johannesburg-based artist William Kentridge began creating his series of hand-drawn films that focus on apartheid- and postapartheid-era South Africa. Kentridge's animated films are composed from his charcoal and pastel drawings, which he vigorously reworks, leaving traces of erasure, redrawing, and often highly visible pentimenti. He is also renowned for his theater-based work - complex multi¬media performances which combine puppets, animation, projection, and live action.
For his Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin commission, the artist created a new installation composed of a mechanized theater in miniature, animated film projections, charcoal drawings, and sculptural elements, collectively entitled Black Box / Chambre Noire. The development of visual technologies and the history of colonialism intersect in compelling ways in this work, which engages the history of the German colonial presence in Africa, allegorically articulated through the installation’s animated films, kinetic sculptural objects, and drawings. The artist considers the term black box in three senses: a black box theatre, a chambre noire as it relates to photography, and ”black box” referring to the flight data recorders used to record information in airline disasters.
