28.10.2006 - Artist Talk. A discussion between artist and curator, 12 p.m.
Deutsche Guggenheim presents parallel to the exhibition various documentations of past explosion projects of Cai Guo-Qiang entitled “Explosions” as a large-screen projection in the atrium of Deutsche Bank.
Nancy Spector, Curator of Contemporary Art and Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, discusses the concept of the exhibition with Matthew Barney, examining his work in relationship to that of Joseph Beuys. The discussion is in English.

07.12.2006 - “Artwork or Event? Notes on Matthew Barney and Joseph Beuys”, lecture by Prof. Dr. Erika Fischer-Lichte, 7 p.m.
Since 1996 Erika Fischer-Lichte is the director of the Institute of Theater Studies at the FU Berlin and in the past has held numerous visiting professorships in the United States, Russia and Japan. A main focus of her research is on the culture of the performative. In 2004 her work Ästhetik des Performativen, which focuses on the concept of performance with its qualities of the bodily co-presence of actors and audience and the performative production of materiality, was published by Suhrkamp.

14.12.2006 - Artist Talk between Jonathan Meese and Dr. Jennifer Allen, 7 p.m.
Jennifer Allen, Berlin correspondent of Artforum magazine, talks with Jonathan Meese, the “enfant terrible” and “shooting star” of the international art scene, about Joseph Beuys, Matthew Barney and the phenomenon of the action-related creation of artworks.

The film series all in the present must be transformed: Matthew Barney und Joseph Beuys, which will be shown at Kino babylon berlin:mitte from October 25, 2006, to January 14, 2007, takes up the concept of the exhibition and juxtaposes a selection of films by both artists. They are supplemented by extraordinary documentaries on both artists. All works are presented in the original version.

Matthew Barney: No Restraint, documentary by Alison Chernick, 2005 (72 min)
Filmmaker Alison Chernick follows Matthew Barney to Japan to document the making of his latest film, DRAWING RESTREINT 9 (2005). Chernick chronicles the action behind the scenes as the artist navigates cultural divides and challenging logistics to realize his creative vision. Deutsche Guggenheim screens the original English version.

The Body as Matrix: Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle, Film by Maria Anna Tappeiner, 2002 (52 min.)
With the five-part CREMASTER Cycle (1994-2003) and its related sculptures, photographs, drawings, and films, Matthew Barney has invented a densely layered and interconnected universe that references sport, biology, sexuality, history, geography, and mythology as it organically evolves. In this program, Barney, Guggenheim curator Nancy Spector, and others discuss the Cycle’s filming and subsequent translation into other art forms.

Joseph Beuys. Transformer a documentation by John Halpern, 2005 (60 min.)
This documentary features Joseph Beuys during the installation and opening of this historic solo exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 1979.

On Humans and Animals

When viewing the artworks of Beuys and Barney, stories and materials hidden within the works are investigated. What do they tell? How can stories be shaped? We will think about the meaning that animals possess in the works of both artists and what they reveal to us about human beings. Afterwards we will give shape to our own ideas.
