Which artists and art works attract the interest of the world's biggest corporate collection? Blind Date, the Deutsche Bank's new exhibition series highlighting its latest acquisitions, provides both an answer to this question and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the collection. From 14 May to 2 July 2006, "newcomers" to the Deutsche Bank Collection are meeting with some of the collection's "old timers" in a blind date that reveals some surprising cross-connections, new perspectives and fascinating parallels.

In the prelate's residence of the former Benedictine monastery and the Art Forum in the Altes Haus (Old House)—one of Seligenstadt's most ancient non-ecclesiastical buildings—42 international pairs of artists and their works offer visitors a series of fascinating dialogues. The pairings document how contemporary trends in art have constantly inspired and left their mark on this corporate collection over the years.
Dr. Ariane Grigoteit, Director of the Deutsche Bank Collection and initiator of the new exhibition series: "We have for some time been seeking for a suitable way to present the collection's new acquisitions. For the first time in the 27-year history of the collection, this new exhibition series, which will be assisted each year by a different international curator, affords insight into current acquisitions and into how they both expand and the collection and keep it up-to-date."

In Seligenstadt the works of art, selected with the assistance of London curator Jessica Morgan, also confront the extraordinary historical setting of the exhibition rooms' architecture: the well preserved Baroque ensemble of the former Benedictine monastery forms the starting point for an artistic journey through the town of Seligenstadt. Following years of renovation work, the sumptuously furnished rooms of the former prelate's residence are only now being reopened to the public and—what makes this exhibition unique—may be seen in their current form only during the period of the exhibition. Thus as visitors make their way to the Art Forum in the Altes Haus, they are confronted by a unique amalgam of global perspectives and local traditions.
Starting on 14 May, such artists as Ellen Gallagher and Eva Hesse, who both in their very different ways explore the tension between geometric and organic forms, will be making a joint appearance in Seligenstadt. A certain amount of tension at these blind dates is guaranteed by such pairings as that of Martin Kippenberger's figurative drawings on hotel letter paper with Hanne Darboven's austerely regimented notations. The young artist Sharon Lockhart meets with Richard Prince, the Polish shooting star Wilhelm Sasnal with American artist Raymond Pettibon, and Jeff Koons with the British father of Pop Art Richard Hamilton. Rosemarie Trockel has a date with Joseph Beuys, who influenced her at the beginning of her career, and Markus Schinwald's photographs open up an entirely new perspective on a master of classical Modernism, Oskar Schlemmer.

A conventional exhibition of the works would not have done justice to the new acquisitions in their new context: the immense Deutsche Bank Collection with its 50,000 works of art. This exhibition reveals conceptual and structural commonalities and provides new insights into genre boundaries, art history, artists, architects and creative processes.
Dr. Ariane Grigoteit: "Blind Date Seligenstadt opens up a panorama of art from classical Modernism to the present that features astonishing perspectives and dialogues, young artists and established stars, German and international art."
