"Fierce Painting" on View at Library

Bank Loans Artworks to Mannheim University
Intense colors
and dynamic gestures - at the end of the 1970s the representatives of
"Heftige Malerei" or "Fierce Painting" very consciously set themselves
apart from the prevailing positions of Minimal Art and Concept Art. With
their neo-expressive works, a young generation vitalized the medium of
painting. The Deutsche
Bank Collection possesses an important selction of paintings and works
on paper by these artists. Some of them have been loaned to the
Hasso-Plattner Library of Mannheim
University where they are currently on view.

At the festive opening of
the exhibition, invited guests were welcomed by Rector Prof.
Dr. Hans-Wolfgang Arndt. Subsequently, Friedhelm
Hütte, Global Head Deutsche Bank Art, presented the more than 20
works on display, ranging from Jiri
Georg Dokoupil's painting Stern in Not (Star in Distress), on
which Dokoupil, a member of the Cologne artists' group Mühlheimer
Freiheit, had a monumental red star go up in flames , to the abstract,
energy-charged compositions of Walter
Stöhrer. Antonius
Höckelmann is represented with a series of flower paintings,
while Karl Horst Hödicke
's Straßenarbeiter (Street Worker, 1976) alludes to the big
city pictures of the German Expressionists. Peter
Chevalier's panorama of the four seasons is hanging across from a
glass front which affords visitors to the library a view of the opulent
baroque foyer of the palace.

The exhibition in the
Hasso-Plattner Library, which was completely modernized a year ago, is
part of the initiative Renaissance of the Baroque Palace, a unique
project in Germany through which the university is opening itself more to
the city and its residents and which at the same time strengthens
students' identification with their university. In addition to extensive
renovations to the building (which was completed in 1731), the project
encompasses workshops and art exhibitions.

Deutsche Bank has
been involved with the University of Mannheim, one of Europe's top
universities in business and the social sciences, for a long time now.
Deutsche Bank supports projects of the Business School and in 2007 was one
of the cooperation partners for the festivities commemorating the
university's 100th anniversary. Together with other companies in the
Rhine-Neckar region, the bank financed the renovation of a lecture hall in
connection with Renaissance of the Baroque Palace. In addition,
from 2000 to 2007 Dr.
Clemens Börsig, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche
Bank, was very personally involved with the university, at which he
studied, as a board member.

The
Hasso-Plattner Libarary is open to visitors Monday to Friday from 8 a.m.
to midnight, and Saturday, Sunday, and on holidays from 10 a.m. to
midnight.
