“Chalo! India: A New Era of Indian Art” at the Mori Art Museum in Tokio, 11/22/08 – 3/15/09
In Hindi, “Chalo!” means “Let’s go!” The title of the exhibition on contemporary Indian art could hardly be more fitting. For years now, the scenes in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Calcutta have been some of the world’s most vital. The show features 100 works by 27 artists, who undermine the stereotypes of India as Bollywood fantasy or developing country. Instead, they investigate themes such as urbanism, lifestyle change, and the current political situation – creating a veritable cornucopia of modern India.
