Book Tip:
“Avner Ben-Gal”

“Art” magazine has called the paintings and drawings of the Israeli artist Avner Ben-Gal “new works full of emptiness, cruelty, and hopelessness.” They depict barren landscapes with burning houses and isolated figures and draw their own version of the reality of recent history far from the propaganda imagery of the mass media that reaches us on a daily basis from the Middle East. The seemingly allegorical paintings and ink drawings of the 1966-born artist, whose first major solo show can currently be seen at the Museum for Contemporary Art in Basel, usually leave behind an ambivalent impression. Ben-Gal’s nightmarish scenes are inhabited by fantastic creatures and plants placed before backgrounds veiled in monochromes that overlay or dissolve scenes of horror and violence. On the occasion of the exhibition, Hatje-Cantz has published an extensive monograph with works from the past several years as well as Ben-Gal’s latest paintings.
